PROF SIMON GICHARU BIOGRAPHY: OWNER OF TV 47 AND RADIO 47

Simon Gicharu is the owner of TV47 and Radio 47, he is also the chairman and founder of Mount Kenya University [MKU]. Mount Kenya is currently one of the largest private universities in East Africa.

Simon Gicharu is the chairman of the rural electrification authority, he is also the founder of Equip Africa Institute and Patron of Graduate Enterprise Academy, and he is also a board member at Thika water and Sewerage Company. Simon is the patron of Inter Universities Rover Moot under Kenya Scouts Association.

Simon Gicharu was named the Eastern African Ernst and young entrepreneur of the year in 2015, he was previously a teacher at a secondary school and also at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and at Thika Technical Training Institute.

EARLY LIFE

Simon Gicharu was born in 1964 in Gathiruini village, Kiambu County, Kenya. He is the first born in a family of seven. The parents are late Stephen Gicharu and Alice Wambui Gicharu. They were farmers who struggled to support the family.

EDUCATION

Simon Gicheru went to Kiawairia primary school, and later on joined secondary school education at Gathiruini secondary school. Simon later on transferred to Murang’a High School where he was made the captain in his final year. After high school education he joined Kenyatta University to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and chemistry.

He is moreover the author of a book by the name Applied Mathematics for Craft Engineering Kenya’s First post-secondary mathematics school book.

Simon Gicharu got scholarship in 1995 At Cranford University in Britain to Study Managing Enterprise Development in Britain.

CAREER

Simon Gicharu was a teacher at a secondary school. He also taught at the Jomo Kenyatta University of agriculture and technology and at Thika Technical Training Institute. He was later on fired by the Teachers Service Commission.

After he was fired he started vending milk to support his family. He used to vender the milking using an old pick-up, however his friends mocked him because of vending milk work. He shared on twitter that “I did my rounds in an old chevy pickup.  Friend laughed at me, calling me a ‘failed graduate’. However, this didn’t shake me. Self-belief is the key to success”.

He later on shared how he tried and pursued a teaching job at the International school of profession Studies, which later on changed the name to Inoorero University but he was denied the chance to teach at the school. Years later he bought the building and everything inside, it is currently acting as Mount Kenya University School of Law located in Parklands.

Simon Gicharu studied at Cranford University in Britain; he came back and started the Kenya Entrepreneurship promotion program. Which provides training and micro loans for young entrepreneur and later on started offering computer studies. It later on became Thika School of management Studies and started offering managerial studies. In 2013 it became the first private college in the country accredited to offer diploma in pharmacy.

Simon Gicharu is the chairman of the rural electrification authority. Simon Gicharu is the owner of TV47 and Radio 47. The radio 47 is the latest station rocking the Kenya air waves, it’s under Cape Media Company. Radio 47 poaches the top talent i.e. the new kid on the block poached famous radio presenters from other stations. The TV47 is also under Cape Media Company which was launched in 2019

PERSONAL LIFE

Simon Gicharu is married with three children. He is the first born of seven. His parents are the late Stephen Gicharu and Alice Wambui Gicharu.

AWARDS

President bestowed Simon Gicharu the 1st order chief of burning spear, Kenya’s highest civilian honor.

Simon Gicharu was named the Eastern African Ernst and young entrepreneur of the year in 2014, in the same year he was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree by Gulu University in Uganda for his contributions to the improvement of higher education in East Africa.

In 2015 he was named the Eastern African Ernst and young entrepreneur of the year, and later was admitted into the Ernst and young Hail of Fame.
