Employers in Kenya consider so many things before they employ a jobseeker. There are basic requirements a candidate must meet before being considered for employment, but there are other hidden things employers look for.
Banks
The easiest place to get a job in Kenya is a bank. The basic requirement for a jobseeker is a university degree and perhaps a professional course. But getting a job in a Kenyan bank is purely on merit and luck.
Positions like bank teller and sales executives require a basic undergraduate degree-it doesn’t matter whether you scored second lower or pass as long as you manage to convince interviewers that you are the best in terms of helping them achieve their goal.
Insurance companies
Insurance companies are mostly interested in professional courses.
If you possess ACII, Certificate of Proficiency (COP) In Insurance, CPA, CIFA, ACCA, or CFA, chances of getting a job in any insurance company are very high.
Also Bachelor of Commerce, statistics and actuarial science graduates find it easier to get employed by insurance companies.
The most fortunate guys are graduates who pursue either Actuarial science professional courses or CFA course. These professionals often get employed in Insurance companies as soon as they complete few levels of their respective courses.
Even if you know nobody but you have good papers you can easily get a job at any insurance company in Kenya.
Government institutions
It is hard to get a job in any government institution in Kenya unless you know somebody or you have excellent papers.
At least 50 % of employees in government institutions got the jobs due to some influence, the rest got through papers.
When job opportunities are advertised by government institutions only 60 % of the jobs go to the right people, the rest are given to persons of interest. But institutions like KRA ,CMA and RBA often consider merit.
Audit firms
The common audit firms i.e PWC,KPMG,Deloitte and E&Y employ purely on merit.You will be 100 % sure of getting a job at the institution if you have the required qualification.
These accounting companies require candidates with at least second upper,B+ in KCSE,a professional course .Experience is not necessary if they are recruiting management trainees.
Manufacturing firms
These firms normally don’t advertise for jobs. If you are clever enough, you take blind application to their headquarters or simply interact with someone who works there.
Most manufacturing firms don’t consider academic qualifications when recruiting. In fact diploma graduates are employed hers.
