University degree has become a benchmark for hiring employees, but there are careers in Kenya that do not necessarily require degree qualifications. Holders of the jobs pull in as much as Ksh700, 000 per month but they are school dropouts.
What is more interesting about these careers is that experiences supersede academic qualification. It’s not uncommon that companies with a tradition of employing non degree holders to turn down individuals with solid academic qualifications.
For non-degree holders, here are the jobs you can perform without degree qualifications
- Member of County Assembly(MCA)
To be an MCA in Kenya you only need a KCSE certificate. Most MCAs do not even hold a high school certificate.
The journey to being an MCA starts from mingling with your locals, promising them heaven and contesting for the seat. Eventually, you will earn upwards of Ksh 300,000 every month for five years, even more!
- KDF Officer
To be recruited into the KDF, what the government require from you is a high school certificate. During recruitment, degree holders are turned away for being overqualified.
Starting salary of KDF officers is Ksh39, 000 but over time it shoots past Ksh100,000
- Radio Presenter
Now tell me, which course did Bonoko,Mogaka,Maina Kageni and Mbusi study in college?!!!These guys never went past form four and are among the highest paid journalists in Kenya.Interestingly, here are their salaries:
Maina Kageni Ksh1.2 million per month
Mbusi Ksh 700,000 per month
Bonoko Ksh300,000 per month
Mogaka Ksh300,000 per month
- Blogger
There are no barriers to blogging. If you have a laptop and can manage to generate good content, you will gain followers.
Millions of Kenyans actually don’t understand what blogging is, they believe a blogger is someone who makes noise on Facebook. Blogging is a lucrative career and is one of the fastest growing professions on earth. In our country, some bloggers make up to Ksh3 million per month yet some don’t even possess any degree qualification.

- Hotel manager
Most of the managers in our hotels don’t possess degree certificates; they are diploma/certificate holders. As long as you have skills in running hotel business, you don’t need a degree to be a manager.
- Traffic police officer
A recent study revealed that traffic police officers are dominating transport industry, they are also joining real estate industry. This is brought about by the fact that being a traffic police officer exposes one to several avenues of generating income. In the short term, or long term if the law doesn’t catch up with them, police officers make solid income from their career. The best thing is, during recruitment only a D is required for one to become a traffic police officer.
Deejay
Deejays in Kenya are now earning decent income.The nice thing about this career is that you don’t need any certificate for you to get a space-you can do the work from home.Some Deejays earn in the north of Ksh1 million per month
