This week Supreme Court Judges ruled that Teachers Service Commission must implement the earlier ruling requiring it to review teachers’ salaries upwards by 50-60 per cent.

But TSC has protested the decision stating that the body does not have the money required in the new arrangement; their efforts to overturn the decision through a court process did not bear fruits.

It has now emerged that the government is reluctant to pay the money stating that the only option remaining is to increase taxes on basic commodities, a decision that requires all stake holders.

Increasing taxes will be almost next to impossibility since Kenyans are already overtaxed.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission has also clarified that the new salary scales as per the court are way above what the commission has calculated.

Due to these dynamics, Kenya National Teachers Union has vowed to call a countrywide strike to force the government pay what is rightfully theirs.
