The Energy Regulatory Commission has published a list of petroleum retail outlets and petroleum tankers found with adulterated fuel or fuel meant for export between April and June 2017.
4,521 tests were conducted at 750 petroleum sites during the period under review. Only 12 sites showed non-compliance. This means that 98.4% of sites were compliant, implying that the compliance rate is very high.
Fuel adulteration is a menace to consumers because it ruins motor vehicle engines while causing air pollution. The sale of fuel meant for export violates tax laws because it denies the state much needed revenue required to support development programmes.
The Energy Regulatory Commission is mandated under Section 95 of the Energy Act 2006 to monitor petroleum products offered for sale in the local market with the aim of preventing motor fuel adulteration or dumping of export bound fuels. In this regard, the Commission undertakes a program of continuous monitoring of the quality of petroleum motor fuels on sale, transport and storage throughout the country.
During the period April – June 2017, a total of 4,521 tests were conducted at 750 petroleum sites. From the tests, 98.4% of the sites were found to be compliant.
However, tests from 12 sites turned out to be non-compliant.
Pursuant to Regulation 15 of the Energy (Retail Facility Construction and Licensing) Regulations 2013, the non-compliant stations and their particular offences are listed hereunder:
