Emotional Kenyan Working at SGR Explains How They Are Mistreated by the Chinese

Hey Venas?I write this to you in confidence (anonymous) kindly don’t reveal my identity due to facing victimization. I write to agree on the published article about SGR workers on the standard today. I am an employee there and I have this to share.

These people already know we can’t do anything to them so they talk to us and mistreat us however they want. There was one who personally asked us to take him wherever we wanted whether HR and that he wasn’t scared. Indeed nothing can be done considering HR is Chinese. They smoke and puff in the office during meetings and we are not supposed to complain. They label everything and ensure that all the computer commands are in Chinese.

We have a translator who is a Chinese but he never conveys the message as we put it of course he has to side with his people. We face a lot of victimization, when we’re asked to cut grass and that is in the KPA yard at ICD instead of hiring casuals. When you say no you’re termed as lazy and you may even get a warning letter. We never have off days, we work tirelessly day and night, it’s either you’re going to work or from work. They force you to take all your leave days and you can’t ask for a one or two day leave, the company does not approve. The amount of work we do while the so called ‘supervisors’ are asleep is too much. These supervisors are unqualified they actually come and we have to take them through work.

Language barrier so you have to keep guessing, using actions since the translator is only available during meetings. They use the staff van to go to their apartments, go for meals, move from office to another but cannot allow use the facility even for official use. We’re forced to work in the rain and stand on the slippery wagons as you adjust locks during loading, where are they you may ask? Sleeping. You only call them when everything is ready for them to communicate to the dispatcher. In the just concluded tax returns almost all staff members were overtaxed with ksh. 10000 and above. Our salary is so little compared to the work that we do.

They don’t give us access to loans unfortunately. We paid a huge amount of money for training (87000) and other departments even more and we’re not even paid half of what we paid. Kenya Railways has proved to not care about our grievances. We need help. I have so much to write, including some making sexual advances to the ladies. It’s just that victimization is real in this company.

Let it reach to the people out there, we don’t share any facilities that they use with them, I guess it’s coz we’re blacks. I have photos of staff members doing manual work, a short video of one working in the rain. Please help us.
