The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Compliance Officer to manage all material transfers agreements, negotiations under the Nagoya protocol.

The Jobholder will be employed to work within the Nairobi Node of the Centre of Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health program. The Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health is an alliance between the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC). It was established to improve the productivity and health of livestock in sub-Saharan Africa using the latest genetic and genomics technologies and related innovations.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Responsibilities

  • To support CTLGH scientists and partners to obtain access and benefit sharing permits (prior informed consent and mutually agreed terms), as well as other necessary permits, around the use of animal genetic resources.  This will involve working closely with the CTLGH scientists as well as others from partner institutions, as well as various regulatory authorities in the partner countries
  • Developing intimate knowledge of the ABS regulations in partner countries and keeping an up-to-date database
  • Developing and maintaining good relations with regulatory authorities in partner countries, including travel to the partner countries where required
  • Maintaining an up-to-date database of ABS and other permits associated with all AnGR samples utilised by CTLGH
  • Capacity building of CTLGH and partner scientists on issues related to ABS and other related regulatory requirements
  • Oversight to ensure that all CTLGH activities are ABS compliant, and development of internal materials on ABS that will support this compliance
  • Other tasks as requested

Requirements

  • Masters in a relevant discipline and 3 years of relevant experience or a relevant Degree and 6 years’ experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in research compliance activities, including support to obtaining various research permits
  • Demonstrated experience of interaction with government departments
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Nagoya protocol and Access and Benefit sharing in relation to the use of Animal Genetic Resources and associated indigenous knowledge
  • Demonstrated experience in working with a range of partners and developing and maintaining strong partner relations
  • Ability to maintain a database
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and proactively
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Willingness to travel to a range of partner countries within Africa and elsewhere
  • Excellent spoken and written English, a knowledge of French would be an advantage

Terms of Appointment

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Responsibilities

Research support

  • Provide and coordinate routine technical support in core genomics and advanced molecular biology techniques to a range of CTLGH projects led by resident and visiting scientists
  • Ensure the highest quality of laboratory practice is maintained
  • Advise CTLGH on innovations in equipment and technologies which are applicable to CTLGH projects.
  • Act as contact point with the Access and Benefits Sharing compliance officer to facilitate all approvals for project compliance with necessary regulations, such as Animal Care and Use, the Nagoya protocol and relevant national and international regulations

Laboratory management

  • Support the CTLGH management in supervision and running of the laboratory and associated facilities
  • Organize the procurement of equipment and reagents for the laboratory and ensure that adequate stocks are available
  • Ensure that all equipment and laboratory infrastructure are properly maintained.
  • Ensure that all equipment and operations within the laboratory are fully compliant with ILRI’s health and safety requirements
  • Act as contact point with ILRI-BecA, which has responsibility for the overall management of the ILRI laboratories
  • Oversee the safe handling, storage and shipment of all biological specimens and samples, including acting as the contact point with ILRI’s Biorepository Assistant
  • Ensure all necessary laboratory working arrangements are in place for visiting CTLGH scientists and collaborators

Requirements

  • Bachelors in Degree in biological sciences or other relevant degree. Master of science is desirable
  • 5 years’ relevant work experience
  • Good understanding of and experience with standard laboratory practice
  • Experience with a range of techniques commonly used in modern, biological research laboratories
  • Experience in the handling and storage of biological samples
  • Experience in managing a modern, biological research laboratory is desirable
  • A pro-active individual, organized and a good communicator
  • Ability to focus on and handle many projects at the same time.
