Why Kikuyu Rarely Study Hard courses Like Medicine and Engineering

If you manage to visit any Kenyan university, you will realize that Kikuyus never study hard courses, they go for business and arts programs.

In the University of Nairobi School of Medicine, majority of the students are Luos,Kisiis and Kalenjin,Kikuyu are a distant fourth. In the Faculty of Engineering, Kikuyu are a distant fourth, too. But try to visit the university’s school of business, almost the entire class comprises of Kikuyu students.

I have come to realize that the kikuyu make calculative moves, they don’t just join college for the sake- they identify careers with high returns. These people were born entrepreneurs, they know that time is precious. As a result, they avoid taking hard courses whose net value is below par.

What I have also observed is that the kikuyu understand the economy, they know the best and worst paying careers. They have analyzed salaries of various professionals. They, for instance, know that a Statistician earns Ksh90,000 while a Finance Manager earns Ksh500,000.Armed with those facts, they opt for an easier program,Bcom rather than BSc Statistics.

I have several Kikuyu friends and this is what they always tell me, “there is no demoralizing like spending 15 years in the university, only to earn Ksh 50,000 after graduation. We better do easy courses, graduate faster and hustle all our way up”.

Research shows Kikuyu tribe pursues the following courses:

  1. Bachelor of Commerce
  2. Bachelor of Procurement & Purchasing
  3. Bachelor of Law
  4. Bachelor of Human Resources Management
  5. Bachelor of Marketing
  6. Bachelor of Accounting
  7. Chartered Financial analyst
  8. ACCA
  9. CPA
  10. Bachelor of Pharmacy
  11. Bachelor of Quantity Surveying
  12. Bachelor of Entrepreneurship
  13. Bachelor of Public Relations

Now,after completion, it’s not surprising to find them dominating in the accounts, human resources and procurement departments. They do so because they are aware this is where Ugali is!

You will hardly see a Kikuyu working as a messenger, security officer or in offices where the flow of cash is low.
