The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The UN-HABITAT internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of Programme Officer the intern will:
– Assist in reviewing project documents, budgets, reports, assessments and evaluations.
– Assist in analysis of financial data using Excel and other programs.
– Liaise with PMOs (Project Management Officers) on project financials.
– Review and monitor contributions from donors.
– Project closure accounts reconciliation.
– Initiation and preparation of correspondence to donors on funds received and providing relevant project details.
– Co-ordinate with other finance staff and respond to inquiries in respect to relevant financial matter.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

-Assist in collecting and producing a list of tools developed by branches and produce summaries for countries and partners;
-Assist in planning, preparing and implementing Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) related events (meetings, workshops, conferences, Expert Group Meetings, etc, and support the implementation of specific recommendations arising from these events.
-Research on best practices and contemporary topics related to housing finance and management, municipal development and sustainable urbanization.
-Assist in identifying capacity building needs, and develop proposals;
-Assist in technical cooperation activities such as Urban planning and design;
-Assist with the design and maintenance of ROAf programmmes, projects and activities on websites and or website pages dedicated to one or more ROAf projects.
-Assist with outreach activities and the production of awareness materials and knowledge products for the ROAf work plan;
-Assist other tasks relevant to the candidate and ROAf, as jointly determined.

Under the Supervision of Programme Officer,the intern will:
-Support and report to the task team.
-Develop an online mapping platform and Identify key filters (Categorization).
-Categorize reference project database.
-Research on adequate platform/host.
-Customize project database and online hosting.
-Integrate units’ inputs to the database.
-Test the coding with attributes.
-Review & revise draft mapping platform.
-Assist in the daily activities of the Branch by supporting IT functions.
-Assist in other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Proven ability to integrate Adobe based graphic material into an online platform.
Experience with Open Text/Red-Dot and/or Drupal 8 development are highly preferred.
Knowledge in creating and managing web mapping data services and applications.
