The Graduate Field Extension Intern, performs and participates in project conservation in a designated watershed in either of the following geographical areas; Sasumua sub watershed in Nyandarua county; Thika – Chania sub watershed in Murang’a county; Maragua river subwatershed in Murang’a county; Sagana – Gura sub watershed in Nyeri county, and; Solio Settlement are in Laikipia county. |

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS |
|
The Graduate Field Extension Intern will support the County Extension Assistant (CEA) in promoting sustainable land management (SLM) and Integrated Natural Resources Management (INRM) practices among the small holder farmers in designated sub watershed. S/he will support farmers mobilization, training in SLM and INRM, advice farmers on appropriate SLM and INRM practices and link them with extension support services at County and sub County levels. In liaison with the CEA and the Field Conservation Coordinator, support in tracking and documenting cost share for in-kind and cash contributions by farmers, organizing farmers to host water fund visitors and develop and share 2 success stories and 1 case study over the 6 months period. |

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE |
|
Conservation Management
- Follow up, capture and document community cost share for in-kind and cash contributions.
- Support in preparations and hosting of County and Water Fund visitors and leading them to farms and conservation sites as agreed with the County Extension Assistant (CEA).
- Support in training farmers on Sustainable Land Management Practices including but not limited to laying grass strips with the right grass varieties, laying terraces in sloppy farms, pegging of riparian land and advising on riparian land management.
- Advice farmers on appropriate agronomic practices and link them with extension support services at the County and sub County levels.
- Advice farmers on sustainable and affordable rain water harvesting technologies.
- Support promotion of Agroforestry practices including but not limited to selection of appropriate tree species, follow ups on trees establishment and management practices.
- Help farmers keep records of their farming enterprises especially labour, production/yields and income.
- Assist project planning team to integrate any new techniques and technologies from time to time.
Reporting and Information Sharing.
- Keep a record of completed farm plans, input demands, levels of support provided and required additional support for each farmer to achieve targets set for conservation and food security interventions.
- Conduct research and support farmers with the latest techniques and information related to sustainable land management and integrated natural resources management.
- Identify, develop and share at least 2 success stories and 1 case study over the 6 months internship period.
- Prepare and share a summarised report on achievements every month with the CEA and Water Fund Manager.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS |
|
- High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience.
- Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. hand-held GPS tracking devices, iPADs, android phones, land levelling boards and any other field equipment).
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, motorbike riding, herbicide or pesticide application as needed).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Fluency in English and Swahili languages and cross- cultural experience appreciated.
- University degree or higher-level college diploma or their equivalent for specialized skills needed.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to obtain a riding or driver’s license and maintain a good conduct record.
