If you are admitted to universities and colleges situated in Nairobi, you may have an uphill task in determining where to rent chap houses. Most estates within Nairobi have overpriced houses which are out of the reach for college and university students, but there are landlords who are considerate enough and have built houses for students. Ideally, you won’t find specific houses for students outside school compounds but there are cheap bedsitters and single rooms that can accommodate students.
Before you decide to seek a room to live in,you must approximate how much to spend on accommodation. It’s known that most universities provide accommodation at a cheaper price but the capacity isn’t enough for all students. This forces some students to seek accommodation outside the school.

- University of Nairobi
If you have been admitted to the university of Nairobi, the best places to live include Kabete, Uthiru,Jogoo Road,Umoja,Donholm,Ngara,Githurai ,South B or Embakasi.The most secure estates are Embakasi,Kabete,Jogoo Road or Uthiru
- Kenyatta University
For Kenyatta University the best estates to live in include Ruiru, Githurai,Kahawa Sukari ,Roysambu or Kasarani.Kenyatta University is located along Thika Road.
- Mount Kenya University, CA University
For those admitted at Mount Kenya University, you can live in Thika or Juja.Also, those at KCA University live in estates where Kenyatta University students live.
- Technical University of Kenya
Technical University students live along Jogoo Road,South B,South C,Nairobi West,Umoja,Donholm and Embakasi.
- Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Multimedia University
If you are admitted to Multimedia University and Catholic University of Eastern Africa,look for houses in Rongai,Kiserian,Ngong or Dagoretti corner.You can also find a house in Langata.But the most convenient estate is Rongai.
- Daystar University
Daystar is located along Mombasa Road near Athi River. The most preferred estates for students in this university are Kitengela,Athi River or Mlolongo.
- USIU
Students in USIU live in Roysambu,Githurai,Kahawa West,Kahawa Sukari,Ngara or Ruiru.
- JKUAT
If you are admitted at JKUAT, look for a house in Juja town or Thika.For those who don’t have a tight schedule, you can get a cheap bedsitter in Ruiru.
- Strathmore University
Strathmore University is located along Langata Road. While studying at this university, make sure you live in estates near the university. Most students live at Madaraka, Langata Road, Jamhuri, Nairobi West, South B or Embakasi.The cheapest estate among these is Embakasi but it will take you 20 minutes to one hour to reach Strathmore University.
- Kenya Institute of Mass Communication
If you are admitted to the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, which is located at South B,the most convenient places to look for a cheap house include Imara Daima,Embakasi,South B and Jogoo Road.
If your college is located in Nairobi CBD,ensure you live in estates with less or not traffic jam.Normally,Mombasa Road is chaotic,so it’s better to live along Jogoo Road or Westlands.
